Brand identity vs brand strategy
The two terms get used interchangeably. They shouldn't be.
Brand strategy is the decision underneath: who the brand is for, what it stands against, what it promises, and how it makes money doing so.
Brand identity is the visible system that expresses the strategy: logo, colour, typography, imagery, voice.
Identity expresses strategy. Without a strategy, it expresses nothing in particular, which is why so many AI-generated identities look competent and forgettable.
Side by side
| Strategy | Identity | |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Why us, for whom? | How do we look and sound? |
| Outputs | Positioning, promise, offer, proof | Logo, palette, type, image style, voice |
| Changes | Rarely | Can be refreshed |
| Owned by | Founder or leadership | Design |
| Test | Would a competitor say the same? | Would you recognise it without the logo? |
The swap test
Put your logo on a competitor's website and theirs on yours. Would anything about your offer, your proof or your promise have to change? If not, you have an identity without a strategy.
The "no logo" test
Cover the logo on your homepage, ad or packaging. Could someone still tell it's yours? If so, your codes (colour, type, image, voice) are working. If not, the identity is a logo, not a system.
Why founders end up identity-first
Identity work is visible and satisfying. You can show it to people. Strategy work is a page of decisions that might be wrong. AI tools amplify this: an identity takes thirty seconds to generate, while strategy needs you to say what you actually believe about your customer.
The order that works
- Write the positioning (see the template on our positioning page).
- Derive the codes from it: colour, type, image, voice and "never".
- Design the identity to carry the codes.
- Brief the campaign.
Where Brandium fits
Build writes the strategy and the identity together: positioning, codes, name, look and offer. The designer gets the why as well as the what. Build can produce stills and a short reel from those codes. Moodboard, Frames, Mock-ups and Mood reel need a locked brand code, so the identity is tied to the strategy.
You can also create images and video from your own prompt in any mode, without a brand code. A standard image is about 6 to 8 credits.
Where to spend first
If you have a small budget, spend it on the strategy and a simple, consistent set of codes, not on a costly logo. A clear positioning with a plain wordmark beats a beautiful mark with nothing behind it. Codes such as one colour, one typeface, one image rule and one voice rule, applied every time, do more for recognition than a logo used inconsistently.
Questions
Should I make a logo first?
No. Settle positioning first. The logo should express it.
What is the difference between brand identity and brand strategy?
Strategy is the decision about who you're for and why. Identity is the visible system that expresses that decision.
Can Brandium make images and video?
Yes. You can create images, and video up to 15 seconds, from your own prompt in any mode. Brand jobs like Moodboard need a locked brand code from Build.
