A brand strategy framework in four steps

Brand strategy is the set of decisions about who a brand is for, what it means to them, and how it earns the right to be chosen. Many frameworks exist. This one is the order Brandium works in: psychology, then world, then campaign, then math. Each step depends on the one before it.

1. Psychology

Start with the buyer's mind. What do they believe now? What are they afraid of getting wrong? What would make them feel clever for choosing you? Marketing psychology comes first because a brand that does not change a belief does not change a decision.

2. World

Build the brand's world: positioning, codes, name, look and offer. Brand codes are the repeatable signals, such as colour, type, imagery and phrases, that make the brand recognisable without the logo. The world should express the psychological insight, not decorate it.

3. Campaign

A campaign is a territory and a sequence: who sees what first, and what follows. Develop at least three distinct concepts, not three versions of one idea. Media comes after the idea, not instead of it.

4. Math

Only now price it. Work from the cost stack you actually have: cost of goods, fulfilment, target margin, and acquisition cost. If you do not have lifetime value or acquisition cost, you do not yet have a spend case. Saying so is part of the strategy.

A worked example (fictional brand)

The brand and numbers below are invented for illustration.

Psychology: buyers of a skincare serum distrust big claims; they want proof without hype.

World: plain packaging, ingredient-first naming, clinical but warm photography.

Campaign: three territories tested, the ingredient story, the routine story, and the honest-results story. The launch sequence opens with the ingredient story to the existing mailing list.

Math: with cost of goods of $12 and fulfilment of $4.20, the founder types a target margin. The list price follows from those inputs. Without a customer acquisition cost, the spend decision is marked as insufficient data.
